What is Aeration & Overseeding?

Aeration and Overseeding - Core

Aeration & overseeding is one of the best cultural practices you can do for your lawn.

Aeration is the removal of soil cores from the lawn. These one- to two- inch cores are left on the lawn and as they break down, microbes within them feed on and break down thatch - the spongy, often impervious layer of decaying material between the crown of grass plants and the soil. Aerating your lawn also provides an ideal growing environment for new seed. Overseeding after aerating a lawn can help create a ticker and more drought and disease tolerant lawn.

How does Aeration & Overseeding Help Your Lawn?

  1. Reduces thatch and compacted soil
  2. Improves air exchange between the soil and atmosphere
  3. Increases heat and drought stress tolerance
  4. Allows more water to reach deeper into the soil
  5. Stimulates root growth and microbial activity

Why Aerate & Overseed?

Although one of the primary benefits of aeration is reduced soil compaction, it also helps prepare a perfect place for new seed to germinate.

The little holes in the soil hold water for the new seed and help to improve soil quality through the release of nutrients from beneficial microorganisms.

When Should You Aerate & Overseed Your Lawn?

The most effective time of year for cool season grasses, such as Tall Fescue or Kentucky Bluegrass, is August through October. Warm season grasses, such as Bermudagrass and Zoysiagrass, are best aerated from late spring through summer.

What Our Customers Say

I had a yard sale this past weekend and I got one compliment after another about how nice my yard looks.

This is my 3rd season with NaturaLawn and I am very happy. My lawn looks great. It had a lot of crab grass to start and I understood it was not going away overnight. But it has improved each season and I believe it is definitely under control. I would like to remind people to 1. be patient those lawn issues did not happen over night and will not be solved in a few applications (may even take a few seasons)  2. Try to follow the recommendations/instructions that come with each application (help them help you and you should see improvement over time).

P.S.  Both the Office and In the Field staff  are great too.  Friendly and helpful.
